Boulter’s Hong Kong Run Ends in Upset Loss to Golubic

Katie Boulter’s campaign at the Hong Kong Open came to an end in the round of 16 on Wednesday, falling to Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic in a 6-2 7-6 (7-2) defeat that left the British No.1 frustrated by what transpired on court.

The match took a decisive turn when an incident during play caught Boulter’s attention and knocked her concentration. Though she managed to push the contest to a tiebreaker in the second set, the distraction proved costly as Golubic closed out the victory.

Boulter Reflects on Turning Point

Reflecting on the loss, Boulter acknowledged her own performance while highlighting the role the controversial moment played. “It was interesting, I was playing some really good tennis. I feel like I should have closed it out but a couple of things happened. There was a little bit of interesting judgement which got under my skin a little bit and, usually, I’m pretty good at batting it off but I was a little tired,” the 28-year-old explained. “It’s end of season and it seemed to get to me but lesson learned, I managed to get over the line.”

The British player’s comments suggest that accumulated fatigue from the season’s demands made her less resilient to the controversial decision. While she typically maintains composure through such moments, the combination of tiredness and the judgment call proved a tough hurdle to overcome.

Next Challenge Awaits

Boulter’s withdrawal from the Hong Kong Open means her season has reached its conclusion. The American Claire Liu will face a different opponent in the quarter-finals, as the British player will not continue in the tournament following her last-16 exit to Golubic.
