Brazilian Rising Star Rafael Camara Secures Haas F1 Seat for 2027 Debut

Rafael Camara has secured his Formula 1 breakthrough, signing with Haas F1 Team to make his grid debut in the 2027 season. The 21-year-old Brazilian driver, currently leading the Formula 2 championship, emerged victorious from an intensive driver evaluation process that tested multiple candidates for the coveted seat.

The selection process took place at Portimao, where Camara impressed team leadership by defeating three rival candidates vying for the same opportunity. The evaluation beat out reigning F2 champion Leonardo Fornaroli as well as Haas reserve drivers Jack Doohan and Ryo Hirakawa, demonstrating Camara’s readiness for motorsport’s pinnacle category.

A Breakthrough Performance

Team Principal Ayao Komatsu praised the Brazilian’s all-around capabilities following his selection. “I’m really excited to sign such a young, amazing talent like Rafael Camara, he showed us more than just raw speed and created an environment to get the best out of himself,” Komatsu said, highlighting qualities beyond pure pace that secured the driver’s future at the American outfit.

The signing comes as Haas reshapes its driver lineup for the new era. The departure of Esteban Ocon at season’s end has opened the door for Camara’s arrival, while Oliver Bearman appears positioned to claim the team’s second seat alongside the Brazilian prospect. Gene Haas, the team owner, has now completed a significant portion of his driver recruitment strategy heading into 2027.

Camara’s selection represents validation of his rapid ascent through the junior categories. His dominance in Formula 2 positioned him as a leading candidate when Haas launched its comprehensive evaluation process, and his performance at Portimao confirmed that potential translates to senior-level competition.
