After a difficult 2026 season, Polish world No.1 Iga Swiatek announced she will not compete in the 2027 United Cup, opting instead to start her campaign at the Brisbane International. The decision is aimed at giving her the best preparation for the Australian Open and a chance to chase a career Grand Slam.
Iga Swiatek confirmed she will sit out the rest of the 2026 season, missing the WTA Finals, yet she still edged up one place in the rankings. Leylah Fernandez and Katie Boulter also made notable jumps, moving to world No.23 and No.48 respectively, with Boulter reclaiming the British No.1 spot. The updated rankings reflect a shifting landscape as the season draws to a close.
Iga Swiatek defeated Magdalena Frech 6‑2, 6‑1 in the opening round of the Wuhan Open, securing her 149th victory in WTA 1000 tournaments and overtaking Serena Williams’ record. The win keeps Swiatek in contention for a spot in the 2026 WTA Finals as she continues her strong season.
Iga Swiatek posted a straight‑sets win over Gao Xinyu in the second round of the China Open. In the ensuing press conference she reflected on Aryna Sabalenka’s renewed motivation to chase the world No.1 spot and reiterated her own aim to climb back into the top eight to qualify for the WTA Finals.
Iga Swiatek, the Polish world No.1, suffered a shocking defeat at the US Open after holding a 5-0 lead in the first set of her round‑of‑16 match against China’s Qinwen Zheng. The loss prompted former champion John McEnroe to comment on the unexpected collapse and discuss the role of Swiatek’s coach, Francisco Roig. Zheng advanced to the quarter‑finals while Swiatek’s campaign ended earlier than expected.
