Welsh heptathlete Abi Pawlett has withdrawn from the heptathlon competition at the Commonwealth Games, with an Achilles injury forcing her out of the multi-event discipline in Glasgow.
The injury has proven problematic for Pawlett throughout the season, having previously sidelined her from the World Indoor Championships. Rather than risk further damage by competing in the physically demanding seven-event heptathlon, Pawlett has made the tactical decision to focus on her recovery while remaining part of the Games roster.
Still in the Mix for 200m
Despite stepping back from the heptathlon, Pawlett will still feature in the 200m sprint at the Commonwealth Games, giving her the opportunity to contribute to Wales’ athletics contingent in Glasgow. The change of plan represents a significant adjustment to her Games campaign but allows her to remain competitive in a single-event format that places less strain on her injured Achilles.
