Wakefield Trinity have confirmed that hooker Tyson Smoothy will depart the club at the end of the 2026 season to join the newly formed Perth Bears in the NRL. The 27-year-old Australian is being released on compassionate grounds, enabling him to return home for family reasons.
Ste Mills, the club’s Director of Rugby, acknowledged the difficult decision: “Tyson has made a fantastic contribution to the squad this season and while we would love to keep him, we are conscious of family circumstances and his desire to return home,” he said.

Smoothy’s move to Perth marks a significant moment in the NRL’s expansion history, as the Bears prepare for their inaugural campaign.
