Wrexham AFC have been issued a £75,000 fine by the English Football League, with £25,000 of that suspended, following the discovery that the club fielded two ineligible players during their Championship campaign this season.
The disciplinary action centers on two separate breaches of player eligibility regulations. Defender Issa Kabore appeared in a match against Birmingham City that ended in a 2-1 defeat for the Welsh outfit, while midfielder Callum O’Hare featured in a 3-0 victory over Millwall.
Administrative Oversight
In a statement regarding the sanctions, Wrexham AFC confirmed the resolution: “We can confirm that Wrexham AFC has reached an agreed decision with the EFL concerning two breaches relating to player eligibility.” The club indicated it is committed to strengthening its internal systems to prevent similar infractions going forward.
Manager Phil Parkinson and Sporting Director Steve Nickson oversee the club’s operations as it navigates the consequences of the eligibility lapses. The suspended portion of the fine means Wrexham must pay £50,000 immediately, with the remaining £25,000 contingent on future compliance with EFL regulations.
The sanctions represent a significant financial penalty for the ambitious Welsh club, which has captured considerable attention since its takeover and inclusion in the professional football pyramid. The breaches underscore the importance of meticulous administrative procedures at the professional level, where player registration and eligibility requirements are strictly enforced by the league governing body.
