Wales brings in uncapped Dragons duo Owen and Hope for Nations Championship squad

Wales national rugby union team head coach Steve Tandy has unveiled a 39-strong squad for the Nations Championship, introducing two uncapped Dragons players to the international setup. Centre Aneurin Owen and scrum-half Che Hope have both received their maiden call-ups to the squad, signalling Tandy’s willingness to inject fresh talent into the group.

The squad announcement also sees the return of Dragons lock Seb Davies and wing Rio Dyer, both of whom were unavailable for the opening rounds of the Nations Championship. Their reintegration into the squad marks an important boost for the coaching staff as Wales prepares for the upcoming tournament.

“It’s great to welcome back the players who were unavailable for the first three rounds of the Nations Championship,” Tandy said. “Added to that, there are a number of players who’ve been in great form for their clubs and so we wanted to give them an opportunity in the squad this autumn.”

Experience and leadership

Captain Dewi Lake, who operates as hooker, continues to lead the squad, whilst established internationals including prop Rhys Barratt and number eight Taine Basham feature in the selection. The group also includes other seasoned performers such as lock Seb Davies, contributing valuable experience to the tournament campaign.

Notable omissions

The squad does come with some notable absences. Leicester flanker Tommy Reffell has missed out on selection, whilst fit-again number eight Taulupe Faletau has not been included in the 39-man squad. These decisions reflect Tandy’s squad building approach as he balances development with immediate tournament requirements for the Nations Championship campaign.
