The Welsh Rugby Union has appointed Lyndon Faulkner as its new chairman, marking a significant leadership transition as the governing body navigates a period of substantial change. Faulkner, a former player turned businessman based in the United States, will officially assume the role at the organisation’s Annual General Meeting on 22 November, replacing outgoing chairman Richard Collier-Keywood.
The appointment arrives during a critical juncture for Welsh rugby. The WRU is implementing a major restructuring that will reduce the professional tier from four teams to three, a decision that places both the Ospreys and Scarlets under threat. This consolidation represents one of the most significant shifts in the Welsh professional game in recent years.
Fresh Leadership at a Pivotal Moment
Faulkner has signalled a consultative approach to his new responsibilities, emphasising dialogue with key stakeholders during the turbulent period ahead. “This is a pivotal time for the game and I will start by listening to those around me and of course remaining open to credible challenge,” Faulkner stated.
The new chairman has committed to serving as a global ambassador for Welsh rugby, leveraging his international business experience and connections. His transatlantic background positions him to represent the sport on the world stage whilst navigating the domestic challenges facing the Welsh professional game.
Leadership Structure
Faulkner joins an existing leadership team that includes Abi Tierney as Chief Executive and Alison Thorne, who holds the position of Senior Independent Director. Together, this group will oversee the implementation of the WRU’s restructuring plans during the coming months.
