Glenn Irwin has been discharged from Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham after undergoing treatment for a possible spinal fracture sustained during a crash at Donington Park. The Northern Ireland rider was taken to hospital following an incident on the penultimate lap of the third British Superbike race at the Leicestershire circuit.
The British Superbike Championship has confirmed that Irwin has been cleared medically and will now be assessed for fitness to race at the upcoming Brands Hatch round. His release from hospital represents positive progress following what could have been a serious incident during competitive action.
Irwin’s crash came during an eventful afternoon of racing in the championship, where competitors including Kyle Ryde and Scott Redding were also in contention. The incident forced medical intervention trackside before Irwin was transported to the regional trauma centre for precautionary evaluation and treatment.
The clearance from hospital medical staff provides encouragement ahead of the next round, though the rider will still need to complete a full fitness assessment before being confirmed for racing duties. The championship’s medical protocols will determine whether Irwin is able to return to competitive action at Brands Hatch or requires additional recovery time.
