Faletau Returns to Cardiff Lineup for Leinster Challenge

Taulupe Faletau will make his long-awaited return to action this week, starting at number eight for Cardiff Rugby in their United Rugby Championship encounter against Leinster. The Wales international has been sidelined since suffering a shoulder injury in March, and his reinstatement to the starting lineup represents a significant boost for the Welsh region.

Cardiff head coach Corniel van Zyl has named a squad featuring several changes as the team prepares for the trip to Ireland. The backline will be anchored by Matty Young at full-back, with Mason Grady continuing on the wing. Aled Davies takes the scrum-half duties, while the forward pack includes hooker and captain Liam Belcher, prop Danny Southworth, lock and back-row forward Semisi Paea, and flanker Dan Thomas alongside Faletau.

The clash against the URC champions comes at a promising moment for Cardiff’s season. The region has recently recorded victories over Scarlets and Zebre, establishing an encouraging foundation for their campaign. However, van Zyl is focused on continued development rather than resting on those results.

“We are really excited to travel to Ireland for what will be a big test against the URC champions,” van Zyl said. “It’s been a pleasing start to the season for us in terms of results but there is plenty to work on in terms of performance and we want to take another step forward this week.”

Referee Sam Grove-White will oversee proceedings as Cardiff seek to extend their recent positive run. Faletau’s availability adds genuine depth to the back-row options, and the veteran’s experience will prove valuable against elite opposition. His return from injury comes at a critical juncture in the season, with momentum clearly building in the Welsh capital.
