Andreeva Storms Back After First-Set Loss to Advance at China Open

Mirra Andreeva showed her resilience at the China Open, bouncing back from a first-set stumble to dominate her way into the third round. The fourth seed dropped the opening set 3-6 to wildcard Yue Yuan before turning the tables with a stunning display of tennis, claiming the next two sets 6-0, 6-0 to secure her progression.

The turnaround was as dramatic as it was decisive. After losing the initial set, Andreeva regained control of the match and delivered consecutive bagels—blanking Yuan in sets two and three to complete the comeback victory.

Finding Focus During the Break

The turning point came during an unexpected interruption. Yuan took a toilet break between sets, and rather than disrupting Andreeva’s rhythm, the pause seemed to provide the spark she needed. “Well, I guess the thing that she went to the toilet maybe helped a little bit because I had more time,” Andreeva explained after the match. “I don’t know, I was just thinking of how I really don’t want to lose the first match that I play here because I love to play in Beijing and I really wanted to play for a longer period of time.”

The reprieve allowed the Russian player to refocus her approach and execute a far more commanding strategy in the subsequent sets, ultimately proving the difference between the two competitors.

Next Challenge

Andreeva’s third-round opponent will be Polina Kudermetova, setting up a matchup between two Russian players at the tournament.
