The Fitzroy River in Rockhampton has received official approval to host rowing and canoeing competitions at the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games following a comprehensive independent technical assessment.
World Rowing and Paddle Worldwide have both endorsed the venue selection, providing crucial validation for the Australian Olympic host city. The assessment examined the suitability of the Fitzroy River Flatwater Facility to meet international standards for elite competition across multiple paddling disciplines.
Safety Measures Confirmed
Officials have confirmed that contingency plans are in place to ensure athlete safety at the venue, addressing concerns about the river’s unique ecological environment. The Fitzroy River is home to approximately 500 saltwater crocodiles, presenting distinctive challenges for an Olympic competition site.
Andrew Liveris, Brisbane 2032 President, emphasized the significance of the endorsements in moving the project forward. “The endorsement provides additional certainty as we move into the next phase of venue planning and Games delivery, ensuring all future design and operational work continues to focus solely on Rockhampton,” Liveris stated.
International Backing
The approval represents alignment from global rowing and paddling authorities. Jean-Christophe Rolland, World Rowing President, and Thomas Konietzko, Paddle Worldwide President, joined Liveris in supporting the venue designation. Three-time Olympic gold-medal rower Drew Ginn has also been involved in discussions surrounding the venue.
The independent technical assessment has cleared the way for continued planning and operational development at the site, with officials directing future work exclusively toward the Rockhampton location for rowing and canoeing competition infrastructure.
