Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson has left 37-year-old Seamus Coleman out of the 26-man squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Kosovo, Israel and Austria.
Coleman, the former Everton captain, has been excluded from the squad as the Irish manager looks to provide opportunities for other defensive options. The decision to leave the veteran out was made jointly between Hallgrimsson and Coleman himself, with the player’s current status as a free agent playing a significant role in the selection call.
The Reasoning Behind the Decision
Hallgrimsson explained the thinking behind the omission, emphasising that Coleman’s lack of regular club football was a key factor. “It is my intention in whatever shape or form that he [Coleman] would be with us in the future, hopefully as a player, his intention is to play, he’s keeping fit but he hasn’t been training with a club so we felt together, and it was more his decision, that it would be appropriate he sit out this one, mostly because he thought it was unfair to other players that he would be taking up a place,” the manager said.
The Republic of Ireland manager indicated this is not a permanent farewell, suggesting Coleman could return to the squad in future competitions if circumstances change.
Squad Updates
Beyond Coleman’s absence, the Ireland squad includes several other notable players across the pitch. Captain Nathan Collins leads the defensive contingent, which also features Robbie Brady, Jack Taylor, Oisin McEntee, Jimmy Dunne, Liam Kitching and Joel Bagan.
In midfield, Hallgrimsson has selected Josh Cullen and Mikey Johnston, while the attacking options include forwards Evan Ferguson and Owen Elding.
Injury issues have also shaped the final squad composition, with several players unavailable for the fixtures ahead.
