Jonas Vingegaard’s bid for a third Tour de France title has ended dramatically after the Danish rider suffered a broken collarbone in a crash on stage 15, forcing him to undergo surgery and ruling him out for the remainder of the 2026 season.
The two-time champion’s withdrawal marks a significant setback in what has already been an exhausting calendar year. According to Marc Reef, Head of Racing for Visma-Lease a Bike, the decision to sideline Vingegaard reflects not only the immediate injury but also the toll of the heavy race schedule he has already completed this season.
Injury Ends Championship Ambitions
The collarbone fracture necessitated surgical intervention, with the severity of the injury making any return to competitive racing impossible in the coming months. Vingegaard will miss the World Championships alongside numerous other events that fall later in the season.
Recovery Timeline Complicated
Vingegaard himself acknowledged the compounding challenges facing his recovery. “After a long and intense racing period, a recovery period was planned after the Tour de France anyway, but due to the collarbone injury the start of my training has been delayed and it is not possible for me to get back to top level in the coming period,” the rider stated.
The injury arrives at a particularly costly moment in the cycling calendar, as Vingegaard had been competing against rival Tadej Pogacar at the Tour. The crash on stage 15 eliminated any chance for the Dane to contest the remainder of the three-week Grand Tour, effectively ending his season’s most significant objective just days before the event’s conclusion in Paris.
