Belgium have appointed Mark van Bommel as their new head coach on a contract that extends through Euro 2028. The former Netherlands captain takes over the Belgium national football team following their quarter-final elimination at the 2026 World Cup, where Rudi Garcia had been in charge.
Van Bommel will assume his duties on 15 August, bringing with him a coaching staff featuring three experienced assistants. Boudewijn Zenden, Maarten Martens, and Reinier Robbemond will complete the backroom team, with the appointments confirmed by Sporting Director Vincent Mannaert.

The new Belgium boss has expressed his ambitions for the role, stating: “It is a great honour to become head coach of Belgium, Belgium has outstanding players and enormous potential. Together with my coaching staff, we want to build a team that is disciplined, ambitious and brave enough to compete with the very best.”
Van Bommel’s appointment represents a significant restructuring for the Belgian federation following their disappointing campaign in North America. The former international midfielder, who earned 78 caps for the Netherlands during his playing career, brings extensive coaching experience to the position.
The Red Devils will now look to rebuild under their new leadership ahead of the upcoming qualifying campaign and the 2028 European Championship in the United Kingdom and Ireland. With Van Bommel’s contract secured through that tournament, the federation has provided stability and clarity over the medium term as the squad embarks on a new chapter.
