Saracens academy forward Totoa Auvaa has been cleared of any wrongdoing following a nightclub incident involving England cricket captain Ben Stokes and England bowler Gus Atkinson.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) concluded its investigation into the matter and determined that Stokes and Atkinson breached team rules during the incident. However, Saracens’ own review reached a different conclusion regarding Auvaa’s involvement.
Saracens’ Position
After conducting its own inquiry, Saracens determined that no disciplinary action was necessary against Auvaa. The rugby club’s decision stands in contrast to the ECB’s findings against the two cricket internationals. In a statement addressing the situation, Saracens expressed dissatisfaction with how the matter was handled, stating: “Whilst the events that occurred… now considers the matter closed.”
Criticism of ECB Process
The north London club took issue with the ECB’s approach to the investigation, specifically criticizing the governing body for failing to involve Saracens in the disciplinary process. This oversight, according to the rugby union side, undermined a more collaborative approach to resolving the incident that involved one of their players alongside two representatives of the England cricket team.
The incident highlights the intersection of professional sports in England and the different standards applied by separate governing bodies when their athletes become involved in off-field matters. While the ECB pursued disciplinary measures against its personnel, Saracens’ decision to clear Auvaa suggests the club viewed the academy player’s conduct during the nightclub encounter differently than the cricket board viewed that of Stokes and Atkinson.
With Saracens now considering the matter resolved, focus returns to the rugby and cricket fields as both organizations move forward from the incident.
