Lizzie Deignan Returns to GB Cycling as Sporting Director Ahead of LA 2028 Olympics

GB cycling has appointed Lizzie Deignan as sporting director, bringing the decorated former racer back into the fold to bolster its road cycling programme. Deignan, who retired in July 2023, will oversee support for the road squad at major events through to the LA 2028 Olympic Games.

The appointment represents a significant return for Deignan, whose competitive career spanned multiple decades at the highest level. She secured an Olympic silver medal in 2012 and claimed the world championship in 2015, establishing herself as one of Britain’s most accomplished road cyclists. Her transition into a sporting director role marks a natural progression into the management side of the sport.

Leadership Structure

Deignan will work alongside Matt Brammeier, who holds the position of Men’s and Women’s Road Cycling Lead. This collaborative structure aims to strengthen the performance framework for British riders competing across major international competitions and the Olympic stage.

The timing of Deignan’s appointment aligns with the cycling programme’s preparations for the Los Angeles Olympics, with the sporting director role specifically designed to support rider performance through to that major event. Her extensive experience competing at world-class level brings valuable insight into the demands athletes face when preparing for and competing at elite competitions.
