Jackson Koivun has announced himself on golf’s biggest stage, capturing his first PGA Tour victory at the 3M Open with a dominant performance that left world number one Scottie Scheffler in his wake.
The American rookie completed 72 holes at 25-under par at TPC Twin Cities in Minnesota, holding off the sport’s most formidable competitor to secure the trophy. Scheffler, despite his pedigree and ranking, had to settle for second place, finishing three strokes behind Koivun’s winning total.
A Tense Finale
The pressure of contending against golf’s elite weighed heavily on Koivun during the final moments of his breakthrough tournament. “I had some nerves coming down 18, all throughout the crowd I kept hearing ‘Scottie’s coming, Scottie’s coming’. I just tried to tune that out and keep playing the golf I knew I could and was able to find some good putts coming down the stretch,” Koivun said.
Elite Field in Minnesota
The 3M Open attracted a stellar field of competitors to the Minneapolis course. Beyond Scheffler, Koivun’s victory came ahead of golfers including Denny McCarthy, Brian Harman, Chandler Phillips, Hideki Matsuyama, and Michael Kim, all of whom competed throughout the tournament but could not match the rookie’s scorching pace.
Koivun’s composure under the intense scrutiny of battling the world’s top-ranked golfer proved decisive. Rather than wilting under the pressure of hearing gallery chants urging on his more celebrated rival, the rookie maintained his focus and executed critical putts when it mattered most, ultimately securing one of professional golf’s most coveted debuts.
