Toone and Kelly dropped from England’s World Cup qualifying squad

England women’s national football team manager Sarina Wiegman has made significant changes to her squad selection, omitting Manchester United midfielder Ella Toone and Arsenal forward Chloe Kelly from the 23-player roster for the upcoming World Cup qualifying fixtures against Greece.

The decision to leave out two established internationals signals Wiegman’s willingness to reshape her attacking options ahead of the crucial qualifying double-header. Toone, a key midfielder for Manchester United, and Kelly, an Arsenal forward, both featured prominently in England’s recent campaigns but have been deemed unready for the upcoming challenge.

Wiegman explains reasoning behind exclusions

Wiegman was direct in her assessment of the omitted players’ recent form. “The main reason is that I think the levels weren’t what I expect from them on the pitch,” the England manager stated, leaving no ambiguity about the performance-based nature of her decision.

The squad announcement brings fresh opportunities for several players competing for positions. Arsenal captain Leah Williamson will continue to lead the team, while her club teammate Lotte Wubben-Moy retains her place in the defensive ranks. Arsenal’s Niamh Charles, competing for Manchester City as a full-back, also features in the selection.

New additions and squad depth

Wiegman has welcomed several new faces into the squad, including Chelsea defender Taylor Hinds and midfielder Lexi Potter. Forward Aggie Beever-Jones from Chelsea earns her place in the group, alongside midfielder Erica Meg Parkinson, who plies her trade at North Carolina Courage in the NWSL.

The squad also includes Freya Godfrey of London City Lionesses and Liverpool defender Grace Fisk, providing depth across multiple positions. The selections represent a blend of established internationals and emerging talent as England prepares for their qualifying encounters with Greece.
