Newcastle Red Bulls have agreed to postpone All Blacks winger Fehi Fineanganofo’s arrival at the English club, allowing him to remain with the Hurricanes for an additional season to pursue selection for the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
The decision keeps Fineanganofo’s two-year contract with Newcastle intact, with his move to Tyneside now scheduled to commence in the 2027-28 season and continue through 2028-29. The arrangement demonstrates the club’s commitment to supporting the player’s international ambitions while securing his services for the future.
Supporting International Ambitions
Fineanganofo expressed his gratitude for the club’s flexibility in accommodating his World Cup aspirations. “I’m really grateful to Newcastle Red Bulls for the support and understanding they’ve shown me,” the winger said, highlighting the collaborative approach between player and organization.
The decision reflects Newcastle Red Bulls’ willingness to work with their incoming signings on personal development goals. Sporting General Manager Neil McIlroy and Head Coach Dan McFarland have prioritized maintaining the agreement while respecting Fineanganofo’s desire to represent the All Blacks on rugby union’s biggest stage.
Wings in Tyneside
Newcastle Red Bulls currently have Christian Wade and Werner Kok operating in the wing positions. The delayed arrival of Fineanganofo provides the club with an extended planning window for their backline composition during the 2025-26 and 2026-27 seasons.
The arrangement represents a notable shift in recruitment strategy, where elite rugby union clubs increasingly negotiate flexible timelines with international players balancing domestic and Test commitments. Fineanganofo’s extended stay with the Hurricanes will allow him to develop further in Super Rugby before transitioning to the English Premiership.
