The slide sent McIlroy tumbling down the leaderboard, leaving him five shots adrift of leader Wyndham Clark. What appeared to be a strong start to the event quickly unraveled, with McIlroy unable to maintain the scoring pace that defined his first 18 holes.
Soft Greens and Scorable Conditions
Despite the challenging nature of professional golf at this level, McIlroy acknowledged that scoring opportunities remained available. “I feel like conditions were pretty similar to yesterday, the wind was coming out of a different direction, but still very scorable,” he explained. “The greens are soft, maybe the ball’s got a little bit more run out on the fairways, but you’ll still see guys shooting pretty good scores today.”
The explanation offered little solace, however, as McIlroy found himself unable to capitalize on what he identified as favorable conditions for low scoring.
Range Work on the Agenda
Rather than dwell on his second-round disappointment, McIlroy committed to immediate action. The golfer indicated he would head to the driving range to address the technical issues that contributed to his performance drop, seeking to sharpen his game before continuing the tournament.
McIlroy’s fall from near the top of the leaderboard after 36 holes represents a significant turn in what began as a promising BMW Championship appearance. Clark’s five-shot lead provides the leader with a commanding position, while McIlroy now faces the challenge of recovering ground against a field that has proven capable of posting strong scores in the week’s conditions.
